On 27 October 2023, the European Commission held a public debate European Climate Stocktake in Brussels, Belgium, reflecting on the EU and the world’s progress towards the goals of the Paris Agreement.

The event provided a valuable overview of the EU and the world’s climate commitment position, as well as the EU's views on priorities and challenges with the upcoming UN Climate Change Conference (COP28) in Dubai starting in November. The COP meeting will gather all the countries who have signed the Paris Agreement to engage in the final political phase of an almost two-year global stocktake of progress towards the goals of the Paris Agreement.

TRANSPATH researcher Dr. Sylvia Karlsson-Vinkhuyzen of Wageningen University & Research and her MSc student Wietse Slob were amongst the attendees of the Brussels event. Wietse is an European Climate Pact Ambassador in the Netherlands and has recently finished his MSc thesis, providing valuable research for TRANSPATH on operationalising the Safe and Just Operating Space framework for transformative change planning in the EU. Wietse’s thesis is available on the website library in the TRANSPATH publications section here.
